How Long to Hold Yoga Poses

The honest answer: it depends on the pose, the style and your body today. Here are friendly ranges you can start from, and a way of counting that does not need a clock.

Start with breaths, not seconds

A slow breath lasts around five to six seconds, so five breaths is roughly 30 seconds. Counting breaths keeps you listening to your body instead of watching the clock, and it adjusts itself: slower breathing, longer hold.

Typical hold times

Every pose sheet shows a suggested hold range for that pose, and each side of a one-sided pose such as Pigeon Pose gets its own time.

How style changes the numbers

In flowing styles such as vinyasa, poses are held for one to five breaths. In hatha, you usually stay for five to ten breaths. In yin and restorative practice, poses are held for three to five minutes or longer, because the point is to relax into the shape rather than work in it. More on this in our guide to yoga styles.

Signs it is time to come out

Come out slowly, rest, and try a smaller version of the pose. Props help a lot; see our yoga props.

For teachers

Hold times shape the energy of a class more than the choice of poses. A beginner class with generous holds feels calm and safe; the same poses held briefly feel rushed. When you build a sequence in the sequence creator, set the time on each pose, and the total length of the class is added up for you.

These are general ranges, not medical advice. Listen to your body and adjust for injuries, pregnancy or health conditions.

Questions & Answers

How long should a beginner hold a yoga pose?

Most beginners do well with five breaths, around 30 seconds, in standing and seated poses, and a little less in balancing poses. Longer holds can come later.

How long do you hold poses in yin yoga?

Typically three to five minutes, sometimes longer. The poses are passive and supported, so the body can soften slowly.

Should I hold a pose for the same time on both sides?

Yes, in general. Give each side the same time, and start with the side that feels harder so you can match it on the other.

What if I cannot hold a pose for the suggested time?

Shorten it, bend your knees, or use a block or a wall. Suggested times are a starting point, not a test.
