Camel Pose with Blocks (Uṣṭrāsana (blocks)) — Beginner Backbend yoga pose illustration with alignment cues

Camel Pose with Blocks

Uṣṭrāsana (blocks)

Beginner Backbend Hold 30–60 sec

Works on Hip flexors · Quadriceps · Chest

How to do it

  1. Kneel with the knees hip-width apart and place a block beside each foot, on the highest setting.
  2. Press the shins down, lift the chest and reach back for the blocks one hand at a time.
  3. Push the hips forward, lift the chest and keep the neck long, breathe; come up with an inhale and rest in Child’s Pose.

To come out, bring the hands to the hips, lift the chest and rise on an inhale; rest in Child’s Pose.

Common mistakes

  • Don’t collapse into the lower back: push the hips forward.
  • Don’t drop the head back hard.
  • Don’t let the knees splay.

Benefits

  • Makes Camel Pose accessible when the heels are out of reach.
  • Opens the chest and front of the hips.
  • Builds confidence in backbends.

Make it easier or different

  • Easier: keep the hands on the lower back.
  • Knees sore: pad them with a blanket.
  • Challenge: lower the blocks, then reach the heels.

Take care: Go easy with neck, back or knee problems, and low blood pressure. Come up slowly to avoid dizziness.
