Low Lunge with Blocks (Añjaneyāsana (blocks)) — Beginner Standing yoga pose illustration with alignment cues

Low Lunge with Blocks

Añjaneyāsana (blocks)

Beginner Standing Hold 30–60 sec each side

Works on Hip flexors · Quadriceps · Glutes

How to do it

  1. Step one foot forward into a lunge, with the back knee on the floor.
  2. Place a block under each hand and keep the front knee over the ankle.
  3. Sink the hips forward and down, lift the chest and breathe; step back and switch sides.

To come out, press the hands down, step the front foot back into plank or down dog.

Common mistakes

  • Don’t let the front knee go past the toes.
  • Don’t arch the lower back: tuck the tailbone.
  • Don’t collapse into the shoulders.

Benefits

  • Makes the hip stretch reachable and steady.
  • Opens the front of the hips after sitting.
  • A base for many standing poses.

Make it easier or different

  • Easier: raise the blocks.
  • Knee sore: pad the back knee with a blanket.
  • Challenge: lift the arms overhead.

Take care: Go easy with knee injuries; pad the back knee.
